Root canal therapy - Endodontics
Endo is Greek for inside and dontic is tooth. Endodontics treats the inside of the tooth, commonly known as root canal work. Root canal treatment saves your natural tooth ensuring it remains healthy and strong for years to come. If you have never had a treatment or it's been many years since your last, there may be some misconceptions about the process. Technology and techniques have moved on greatly with over 14 million teeth treated each year.
Treatment can be completed in one or two visits, and most patients find the treatment very comfortable. As patients often seek root canal treatment to alleviate pain there can be some sensitivity for a few days after treatment but this is easily soothed with standard painkillers.
The procedure is completed in four phases: preparation, cleansing, filling, and finally covering the tooth, which maybe done by your own dentist.
Firstly an Endodontist examines the tooth, takes a digital x-ray and then applies anaesthetic to numb the area. A protective rubber sheet isolates the tooth and keeps the procedure clean and free of saliva.
A small opening is made in the top of the tooth and the root canals cleansed and filled. This might be over one or two visits. The tooth is then sealed. If it is a back tooth, it may need a crown for protection. Sometimes it is best we do this for you, but usually your own dentist will provide it.
All dentists receive training in Endodontic treatment, but many choose to refer patients to specialists for this advanced treatment. Specialists focus exclusively on root canals building a body of knowledge and experience that brings the best results in both simple and complex cases – they have also received substantial additional training that continues throughout their career.
Endodontic treatment is the best solution for teeth where the interior pulp is damaged. The only other treatment available is extraction and replacement with an implant or bridge. This is more complex, costly and involves procedures on adjacent teeth and nothing is as good as keeping the natural tooth.
We only use the very best tried and tested technology at all times.
